Change.org petition urges creation of Selena Quintanilla for MAC

Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Lorde are just some of the musicians that have partnered with cosmetics giant MAC to create custom lip colors.

Selena was one of many of our first beauty gurus. The fluttery lashes, perfect brows and of course, bold red lips were iconic — as iconic as any created by Lady Gaga and her counterparts. So it seems strange that no major cosmetics company has been able to create beauty products inspired by the great singer. She’s so beloved that many fans still clamor to buy nearly anything Selena related.

Change.org petition urges MAC to create Selena lipstick line Some Selena fans are trying to change that via a Change.org petition urging the cosmetics company MAC to create a limited edition Selena-inspired cosmetics line. “We want MAC Cosmetics to create a line that represents the community that shops MAC make-up.” The petition goes on to say that had she lived, Selena would be an ideal MAC girl. And they might be right.

Though she has been gone nearly 20 years, her look is still one many young women go for. Need evidence? Check YouTube. There are a number of videos dedicated to her beauty look, DIY costumes, homage and more. Instagram accounts are dedicated to her. And, she’s makes frequent appearances on social media, especially on #womencrushwednesday #wcw.

There’s also the fact that Latinas are big spenders on beauty and cosmetics products. According to the Change.org petition “Latinas are 40% more likely than non-Hispanic women to apply their lipstick eight or more times a day.”

What’s more, ’90s nostalgia and a return of the decade’s bold reds and maroon lip color make this an ideal time to capitalize on both fans and those who are actively searching (ahem) for those shades just like they wore in the ’90s.

It all seems to suggest that a Selena lipstick would be a slam dunk.

Change.org petition urges MAC to create Selena lipstick line As of post date, the petition had more than 25,000 supporters, fewer than 10,000 needed to reach their goal.

Due to the petition’s popularity and viral spread, MAC cosmetics responded on February 18:

“The loyalty and enthusiasm of Selena’s fans are clearly evident and we love this. M·A·C admires the passion and joy Selena brought to the world. She was an amazing person with amazing talent. We consider all types of feedback like this as we plan our collaborations.”

Organizers are quick to point out it wasn’t the response they were hoping for, though they haven’t given up hope. They are pushing for greater numbers to sign the petition and keep the momentum going on social media.
