Rodeo Dreaming: Charro Reality Show Los Cowboys Debuts on Hulu

Los Cowboys to Debut on Hulu Modern Tejana

For as long as I can remember growing up, I wanted to be a charra. Those girls wearing gorgeous Mexican dresses confidently riding horses down the length of many a Texas parade look so beautiful and regal, it’s hard not to want to follow in their footsteps.

Los Cowboys, a new reality series debuting on Hulu, sheds light on both sides of charrería – the fabulous riding and elaborate ensembles that the audience sees and loves, as well as all of the hardcore training, effort and stress involved in excelling in the rodeo arts.

The series introduces viewers to the friends and family that form a California-based charro team. Alex, the leader, is expecting a new baby and it totally unprepared to balance his changing life. Marisela is his funny, but demanding wife who is not having it. Robert is a former rodeo star, playboy/bachelor and source of plenty of unfiltered jokes. Then there is Ivette, the model/actress who can school them all with her riding skills.

They spend their days working in Los Angeles and surrounding areas and spend every available minute (much to the frustration of their wives and families) honing their craft. The ultimate goal of any good charro team? Make it to the Mexican National Rodeo Championship.

Los Cowboys to Debut on Hulu Modern TejanaIt’s exciting to see the team come along under a tight timeline, money crunches, and team issues. Fun and funny, Los Cowboys is a great option for reality show lovers who are over housewife drama, rose ceremonies, preschool pageants and anything duck or dynasty. This, after all, is about something we can get behind – people who will give almost anything to master a skill passed on through generations and chase a dream. That’s a lot better than watching another tired dinner party full of tearful tantrums and chardonnay throwing.

Don’t get it twisted, there is plenty of reality-show dramatics, sassy quips and one-liners to satisfy. But, at its crux is something many U.S Latino Gen Xers and Millenials face: keeping some old-world traditions alive while living a contemporary, urban life. It’s tough, but these guys have created a community that values charrería and wants to see it continue and flourish so that the next generation can fall in love with its artistry and the athleticism.

Los Cowboys premieres January 26 on Hulu. Check out the trailer here.
