The 21 Fall Beauty Best Buys at HEB
Ulta is amazing; Sephora is my jam; but for great everyday makeup, HEB is my go-to beauty destination. So it was no surprise that when it came time to refresh my makeup for the season, I would find my fall beauty best buys at HEB.
I’ve written before about being a beauty junkie and my addiction to the HEB beauty aisles is showing no signs of slowing. I try to refresh my essentials every spring and fall, but the great prices don’t discourage me from grabbing an odd eyeliner, lipstick or other latest and greatest product on my weekly grocery runs.
Because I have a history in beauty editing and I’m a frequent beauty product “buyer and tryer,” I’ve learned to spot a great bargain. In that spirit, here are my favorite products for the fall. While they may feel a little indulgent, each one is under $20 so you don’t have to splurge to update your beauty routine.
Foundation & Finish
There are some fabulous foundations, concealers and powders now on the market. A favorite among editors, beauty bloggers and more is Maybelline New York Fit Me Foundation Matte + Poreless. As you can see, it provides a truly matte finish without a hint of shine. Medium and tan-skin women will appreciate the wide array of shades in warm and neutral tones. Another wonderful option is Maybelline New York Super Stay BetterSkin Skin Transforming Foundation, which provides a satin finish, helps disguise pores and stays put for hours and hours. Finally, L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup has more of a dewy finish but still provides a lot of coverage. The result is a pretty, glowy look.
One of the best drugstore concealers out there is Maybelline New York Fit Me Concealer, which works perfectly with the accompanying foundation, but can blend well into other foundation finishes. Set your face with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte 16 HR Powder.
Another super cheap find, the e.l.f. Kabuki Face Brush is a steal a $3. Compact bristles help me swirl on powder and blend it well to avoid the “powder puff pat” look that you can get when you apply pressed powder with the sponge or puff that comes in the compact. Finally, give your face a spritz of L’Oréal Infallible Makeup Extender Setting Spray to avoid any melting or fading.
Fall makeup calls for deeper lip shades whether they be neutral, red or burgundy. I love a matte or satin lip for fall, and I’ve found some affordable beauties. As I prefer lipstick to lip gloss (and a glossy finish seems more suited to spring and summer) I’ve stick to lipsticks for this list.
Rimmel London Tower of Mauve 240 is the shade I grab regularly. It’s not only pretty and pigmented, but it’s quite possibly one of the softest lipsticks I’ve ever applied. A rusty red, L’Oréal Paris Eva’s Red 403 is a very flattering color on warm medium and tan skin tones. The finish is satiny and smooth. Milani Matte Confident 67 is a warm burgundy that immediately reminded me of the late 90s when all of our lips were maroon. The formulation is smooth and light, but stays on well. I’m also a recent Wet n’ Wild convert. I didn’t often think about the brand until a friend who knows beauty reminded me that they are one of her go-to brands. Wet n’ Wild 526A Dark Wine is a pretty plumy wine shade that I will be wearing all season.
Line them with NYX Retractable Lip Liners in Dark Red and Nude Pink, which will help seal in nude, neutral or deep lip shades.
Late fall and the holiday season were made for a little shimmer. L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Smoldering Plum and Amber Rush offer both beautiful shimmery finishes and highly pigmented color that does not budge.
NYX Avant Pop 10 Color Shadow Palette was a fab find at an HEB on the far Northwest side. I have yet to see it again, so I’m glad that I scooped it up when I did. The color payoff is wonderful for each of the 10 (matte and shimmery) shades that come in the palette. And unlike other drugstore palettes, the amount of product you get is generous.
I hate to see individual pencil lines in brows, so I was glad to discover Maybelline Paris Brow Define and Fill Duo that has both a pencil and a smudger. You can get the precision of the pencil, but fix mistakes and give your brows a softer look with the smudger.
Cat eyes are beautiful, but hard to do beautifully. Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum has a long, thin tip that makes application unbelievably easy. The line it creates is fine but very dark and the length of the pen makes it easy to hold and create a wing.
CoverGirl’s The Super Sizer Mascara has a teeny tiny plastic bristled brush that grabs and coats every lash – no matter how small. What’s more, the brush helps to separate them and keep them from clumping.
Prime & Glow
Before you apply a stitch of makeup, start with a primer. I’ve tried several drugstore as well as high end brands and two that stand out are NYX Pore Filler Primer and e.l.f. Tone Adjusting Face Primer, but for different reasons. The NYX pore filler provides a matte finish and does work just as described – it fills in large and open pores to give that porcelain doll look. The e.l.f. primer is much thinner and a bright purple. It was also $6. While I didn’t notice much of the color correction that it claimed to provide, it did give my skin a smooth, soft canvas for my foundation. That’s well worth the $6.
You’ve applied primer, foundation and bronzer or contour powder, now you’re ready for a highlight. L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in N201 is a lovely rose gold shimmer highlighter that applies like foundation. A little goes a long way and you can build it up from subtle to intense as I’ve shown here in the swatch. There are two additional shades in the Lumi highlighter collection, but this one is the only one that blends color with the metallic shimmer and looks super flattering on medium and tan skin.
With all of these goodies, you’ll be ready to shine for the rest of the season and into winter.
